Community Sanitation Overview:
All 47 households and facilities use individual wells; of these, only 2 units lack plumbing. Thirty-three homes, including 10 new HUD housing units north of the airport, are connected to the piped sewage system. The remaining 15 homes use septic tanks. Funds have been requested for a master plan to rehabilitate the washeteria, develop two new wells, upgrade the landfill and expand the piped sewer system.
RUBA Status & Activities This Qtr:
In December RUBA staff had traveled to Nikolai, one of the major issues discussed was the community's lack of elections in the last three years. The Mayor requested help in setting up a special election to reactivate the council. RUBA staff provide information to the standing Mayor but the Mayor has not returned any contact back. A concerned resident of Nikolai contacted RUBA staff in reguards to the fuel situation. The resident reported they currently have about a two month supply of fuel left. There is an accountability issue on the tracking of revenues and disbursement of diesel fuel deliveries. The next barge will not be until the summer which forces fuel to be flown in when they run out. Repeated calls were made to contact the Mayor but none were successful or returned.
RUBA Activities for the Coming Qtr:
RUBA staff will continue to contact the Mayor and offer support and direction to help the community reach sustainability.
