Affordable Care Act
Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) on March 23, 2010. The stated purpose of the law is to expand access to health insurance to all Americans. Some of the law's provisions became effective in 2010, while others will be phased in through 2020.
The majority of the insurance provisions of the ACA become effective January 1, 2014, including the start up of health insurance exchanges, also referred to as “marketplaces, and the requirement for all Americans to have qualifying minimum essential insurance coverage.
