One of the changes to business licenses, as a result of this new law (effective 10/29/2014), is a business license fee discount for disabled veterans. 1. What is the discounted business license fee for a disabled veteran, effective 10/29/2014? $25 for a one year business license. $50 for a two year business license. 2. How do I qualify for the disabled veteran discount? To qualify for the disabled veteran discount under AS 43.70.030: The business must be a sole proprietorship. How do I obtain the disabled veteran discount if I am renewing a business license? If you are renewing an existing sole proprietorship business license, to initially qualify for this discount, you will need to submit (one-time for each business license) a business license renewal paper application and provide a copy of your service connected disability determination letter from veteran affairs or a copy of your military ID containing “service connected” disability determination. NOTE: you only need to provide the copy of your service connected disability determination once per business license. How do I obtain the disabled veteran discount if I am purchasing a new business license? If you are purchasing a new sole proprietorship business license, to qualify for this discount, you will need to submit (one-time for each business license) a new business license paper application and provide a copy of your service connected disability determination letter from veteran affairs or a copy of your military ID containing “service connected” disability determination. I already purchased/renewed my business license; can I get a refund or pro-rated refund if I qualify for the disabled veteran discount? No. Business licenses, once issued, are not refundable [per 12 AAC 02.010(e)] nor pro-rated (with the exemption, per 12 AAC 02.015, if the sole proprietor licensee dies). NOTE: you only need to provide the copy of your service connected disability determination letter once per business license. Can I obtain both a disabled veteran discount and a senior citizen discount? No. Per AS 43.70.030 if you qualify for both the senior and disabled veteran discounts you may only select one discount. The discount fees cannot be combined. If you qualify for both discounts the choice is yours which discount you may choose to use.
