Alaska Native Language Preservation & Advisory Council Population In recent years, Alaska Native people have migrated from rural to urban Alaska. Based on comparisons of the 2000 and 2010 U.S. Census data, Alaska Native population increased a total of 13.72 percent. Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau combined have increased in total population by 46.46 percent among those who identified themselves as Native; while the rural areas have lost 16.43 percent. With this growth and change, traditional knowledge and ways of knowing are being lost.
