Community Risk MAP Studies: Kotlik Risk MAP Study

The village of Kotlik is located at the north of the Yukon Delta in western Alaska, sited along the east bank of Kotlik Slough at the confluence of the Kotlik and Little Kotlik Rivers. This area is part of the greater Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, the vast river delta where the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers empty into the Bering Sea and lies within the Yukon-Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Kotlik is 35 miles northeast of Emmonak, 165 air miles northwest of Bethel and 460 miles from Anchorage. Kotlik is considered a remote Alaskan community, accessible only by air and water.

Kotlik was prioritized for a Risk MAP study by the State in September 2018 because the village has been dealing with the impacts of flooding and erosion for years. Kotlik was identified as highly vulnerable to erosion among 187 rural Alaskan communities evaluated in a 2018 Statewide Threat Assessment of flooding, erosion and permafrost degradation threats. The threat assessment also identified Kotlik as one of 13 highly vulnerable communities for all hazard threats (flooding, erosion and permafrost degradation) evaluated in aggregate.
