Board of Dental Examiners Dental Specialty Licenses Required Starting July 23, 2023 Effective July 23, 2023, dentists cannot use the term “specialist”, the name of a specialty, or a phrase that would suggest to the public that the dentist is a qualified specialist in a branch of dentistry unless they have a specialist license in that branch. A dentist can only represent themselves as a specialist in a branch of dentistry that’s recognized by the board (listed below). To obtain a specialist license, please submit a Dental Specialty License application along with the required documents. We highly encourage anyone wanting to continue providing dental specialty services after July 23rd to submit your applications right away to allow for prompt processing and to have the specialty license approved and ready to issue on that date or shortly thereafter. The specialties recognized by the board are: Endodontics Oral and maxillofacial surgery Oral and maxillofacial radiology Oral and maxillofacial pathology Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics Pediatric dentistry Periodontics Prosthodontics Dental public health Dental anesthesiology Oral medicine Orofacial pain Dental Radiological Equipment Effective July 1, 2023, the oversight of Dental Radiological Equipment will shift from the Alaska Board of Dental Examiners to the Alaska Department of Health (DOH). Information will be added to DOH’s Radiological Health webpage as soon as possible. In the meantime, the DOH Dental X-Ray Registration form is available here and should be submitted to doh.radiation.control@alaska.gov”. Changes to Application Process: PBIS Closure Due to the closure of Professional Background Information Services (PBIS) as of November 16, 2020, all items that would normally be submitted through PBIS must now be submitted directly to the division. Please see the appropriate checklist for the application which you are submitting.
