Board of Dental Examiners Board Advisories Dental Radiological Equipment Memo from Radiological Health Program Effective July 1, 2023, the oversight of Dental Radiological Equipment has shifted from the Alaska Board of Dental Examiners to the Alaska Department of Health (DOH). For more information see DOH’s Radiological Health webpage. In the meantime, the DOH Dental X-Ray Registration form is available here and should be submitted to doh.radiation.control@alaska.gov. Myofunctional therapy and orofacial therapy are within the scope of practice of dentists and dental hygienists. Assessing and evaluating of orofacial and myofunctional dysfunction is within the scope of practice of dentists and dental hygienists. Dentists and dental hygienists should complete advanced training prior to providing treatment. The Alaska Board of Dental Examiners supports dentists and dental hygienists in treating orofacial myofunctional disorders to patients of all ages in collaboration with other licensed healthcare professionals. Medical Spa Services Work Group Six licensing boards have convened a work group to review the regulation of “medical spa services” such as IV hydration, advanced esthetics, Botox administration, and other related procedures. Please visit the Medical Spa Services Work Group web page for additional information. Warning About Botox Injections and Fillers The public should be aware that injection of Botox by dental hygienists is not within their scope of practice and is therefore contrary to state law. The scope of practice for dental hygienists is set out in a closed list at AS 08.32.110(a)(1) and (2), which does not include Botox and fillers, which are prohibited by AS 08.32.110(c). Per AS 08.32.110, the administration of Botox and/or fillers may not be delegated by a dentist to a dental hygienist. Dental licensees and members of the public should contact staff at boardofdentalexaminers@alaska.gov with any questions. Mannequin-Based Clinical Exams Now Accepted for Licensure The Board of Dental Examiners has adopted regulations to accept both mannequin and patient-based exams for dentist and dental hygienist licensure. Applicants who have passed a mannequin-based exam and meet the other requirements for licensure in Alaska are encouraged to submit initial application to the division for processing.
