Regulation of Professional Geologists

The Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing staffs the geology program. Geologist certification in Alaska is based solely upon the registration requirements of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). If you are not already registered with AIPG, please visit their website to apply for a Certified Professional Geologist Membership (CPG) before completing the Alaska License Application: aipg@aipg.org

State of Alaska Geologist Certifications have no expiration date and require no renewal fees.

Geologists who practice independently, on a contract basis, must obtain an Alaska Business License.

Statutes and Regulations

Alaska Statutes are passed by the legislature. Regulations (also called the Alaska Administrative Code) are rules adopted by the department to implement, interpret, and make specific the statutes. Both statutes and regulations have the force of law.

AS 08.02.060 specifically applies to geologists. AS 08.01 - 08.03 and regulations 12 AAC 02 apply to all professions regulated by the division.

  • Geologists Statute AS 08.02.060:
"The Commissioner of Community and Economic Development shall certify an applicant as a professional geologist if the applicant is certified as a professional geologist by the American Institute of Professional Geologists."
  • Centralized Licensing Statutes
AS 08.01-08.03. Applies to all professions.
  • Centralized Licensing Regulations
12 AAC 02. Fees, name and address changes, examinations review, general provisions. Applies to all professions.

Proposed regulations are advertised in Alaska newspapers and we invite public comment on them.
